Our World 2000: Children's Thoughts about the New Millennium
This book is a feast of words and pictures from children throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland. It's the result of a competition held to celebrate the UK National Year of Reading and the turn of the new millennium. The competition asked primary school children for their thoughts about what the future would bring. The children whose work is contained in this book are between three and twelve years old as at 30th April 1999, which was the closing date of the Our World 2000 Competition. They come from all over the UK and Republic of Ireland, and from the broadest possible backgrounds and learning abilities. A full list of the schools is printed at the back of the book. In a handful of instances, we were unable to ascertain certain children's surnames. In these cases we have printed the names of the child's school next to their entry. "What will scientists discover? Will they discover that cars can fly or maybe just a pig? Will we holiday in Mars, or just in Space? Will I be happy or will I be sad?" Most of us have given some thought to how the world might change in the years ahead. This book contains the thoughts of hundreds of children from all over the UK and the Republic of Ireland about what the future will bring. Wii we have solved the problems of war and pollution? Perhaps the world will be a better place, full of helpful robots and flying cars. Fascinating, funny and full of fresh ideas and insights into the way children are thinking today, this is a book that everyone should read.
