Growth Story of Big Cats in India!

Recently on 29th July, we celebrated International Tiger Day. This being the 50th year of Project Tiger in India, the tiger numbers have increased from 268 in 1973 to 3167 as of 2022, thanks to the collective efforts of the Government, Conservationists, and Local communities. Madhya Pradesh has the maximum number of tigers with 526 followed by Karnataka which has 524 tigers. Corbett Tiger Reserve has the highest tiger population among all tiger reserves in India.

As per the latest census released in April 2023, the numbers have increased from 2967 to 3167 in the past 4 years. The initial number of nine tiger reserves across 18,278 square km of land in 1973 has now expanded to 53 tiger reserves cumulatively protecting an area of 75,796.83 square km across the country. Proud to share that India accounts to approximately 75% of the world Tiger population.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Project Tiger in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the “International Big Cat Alliance” to safeguard and conserve 7 of the world’s most important big cats, including tigers, leopards, lions, snow leopards, jaguars, pumas, and cheetahs. Let us hope their numbers also grow in the coming years.
