Row, Row, Row your snake boat!

The 69th edition of the famed Nehru Trophy Boat Race (NTBR) took place on August 12, 2023, at Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha, Kerala. The event, often referred to as Kerala's 'Olympics on water', was inaugurated in 1952 by India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. During that period, the local communities of Alappuzha conducted a friendly boat race. Impressed by the spirit and enthusiasm of the participants, Nehru came forth to honour the winners with a silver trophy which was shaped like a snake boat. Later then it was called as the “Nehru trophy race” which is conducted every year now.

Held annually on the Punnamada Lake, the race features snake boats colloquially known as Chundan Vallam, the boat is described as a snake boat because it resembles the hood of the snake. Several teams from different places in Kerala take part in this contest, with each team consisting of about 100 – 150 members, who will be transformed into vigorous rowers. The race is held on a straight-line course that covers a distance of 1.4 kilometers

The event showcases Kerala's rich tradition and culture, attracting thousands of spectators. Today, it stands as a celebrated water sport tradition, reflecting the state's vibrant heritage and community spirit.
